Champagne taste on a beer budget — it's not as easy as it seems.

With more and more cities across the country implementing living wage laws, we wondered if it was possible to buy enough groceries on $31.42 a week — the minimum the government considers an adult needs to eat healthy.

To find out, we asked five local chefs to come up with a three-meal-a-day plan for week for on that budget following the U.S. Department of Agriculture nutritional guidelines. The task proved difficult from the get-go. One chef turned us down, saying it was impossible to plan that many meals on such a budget. After giving it more thought, two others dropped out, finding it was too difficult and time-consuming to fit the nutrition criteria.
