Former Peru President Fujimori Denied Bail in Chile
Nov. 8 (Bloomberg) -- Former Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori was denied bail in Chile, where he was arrested yesterday at the request of Peruvian authorities who plan to seek his extradition.
Fujimori, 73, was detained in the Chilean capital of Santiago early yesterday, hours after his arrival from Japan, where he spent five years in exile.
``He will stay where he is,'' Miguel Gonzalez, a spokesman for Chile's Supreme Court, said today in comments broadcast by state-run National Television.
Fujimori fled Peru in November 2000, faxing a resignation from Japan, following allegations of corruption within his administration. Peru's government now wants Fujimori, the son of Japanese immigrants, to face charges including involvement in the deaths of 25 people in the early 1990s.
