By the use of torture, Christians wrested confessions of witchcraft from millions of people during the dark ages. In the light of the certain knowledge that women do NOT really ride broomsticks over the rooftops or transform themselves into black cats, it would appear that every one of those confessions, although solid in the law of the time, were totally without basis. Even though the (Un)Holy Inquisition was officially shuttered in 1836, witch burnings continued as late as 1995 (Mexico). Some insanity takes a long time to cure.
