'Suicide' by Syrian interior minister

Syrian Interior Minister Ghazi Kanaan, a former military intelligence chief in Lebanon, has committed suicide, the state news agency said.
"General Ghazi Kanaan, minister of the interior, committed suicide this morning in his office in Damascus," Sana said.
"The relevant authorities are investigating," the agency added.

Reportedly Kanaan has asked the UN investigating team to place him on the witness protection list in exchange for information about the murder.
According to the Kuwaiti newspaper Al-Seyassah yesterday, Kenaan "has asked Detlev Mehlis, the head of the UN team, to put him on the protected witnesses list in exchange for information on how the Syrian regime planned the assassination of Hariri."
The newspaper added that its sources in France said that a group of Syrian Army officers "have defected and joined the opposition powers," who are currently preparing to take over power in Syria, betting that the "Assad regime will fall soon."
